In a move aimed at strengthening Ugandan participation in the oil and gas sector, TotalEnergies has brokered a partnership that has enabled Makerere University to acquire laboratory equipment for polymer and water analysis.
The equipment was officially handed over today to the Department of Geological and Petroleum Studies at Makerere University by officials from SNF, one of TotalEnergies’ contractors on the Tilenga Project yesterday (Wednesday). SNF is currently undertaking a pilot study on enhanced oil recovery through water injection at two well pads.
Speaking during the handover, SNF Project Manager Erwin Graziani said the donation is intended to equip students with hands-on practical skills that will enhance their competitiveness in the job market. He added that SNF will continue to support the university in the proper use and maintenance of the equipment.
Receiving the equipment on behalf of Makerere University, the Head of the Department of Geological and Petroleum Studies, Dr Geoffrey Arthur Batte, thanked TotalEnergies and SNF for the support and assured them that the equipment will be well-maintained and fully utilised for the benefit of students and the country.
Dr Batte’s remarks were echoed by the Dean of the School of Physical Sciences, Prof. Michael Owor, who challenged staff and students to use the equipment sustainably and explore long-term maintenance solutions beyond relying solely on SNF’s support.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including regulators led by the Director of Environment, Safety and Health at the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, Joseph Kabusheshe, Makerere University partners led by TotalEnergies’ National Content Lead, Rosette Komugisha, as well as students who expressed appreciation to SNF.
Participants noted that such partnerships are critical in bridging the gap between theory and practice, ultimately enhancing skills development and delivering meaningful societal impact.
