Kamuli district LC5 Chairperson, Maxwell Kuwembula, has died in a horrific road crash that occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning in Nakifuma, Mukono district, on the Gayaza–Kayunga Road.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident, stating: “A fatal accident occurred today, June 12, 2025, at around 4:40 am in Nakifuma, involving two motor vehicles, UBR 835K (Trunk) and UG 699M (Pajero). The accident claimed the life of Kuwembula, the LC5 chairperson of Kamuli district.”
Onyango explained that the incident took place near the Ministry of Water and Environment office in Nakifuma, along the Nakifuma–Kayunga road.
“The vehicles involved were: UBR 835K (Hacman, yellow) driven by an unknown driver, and UG 699M, a white Toyota Hilux Double Cabin, driven by Kuwembula, who was heading to Kamuli from Kampala. The accident occurred when Kuwembula's vehicle rammed into the parked UBR 835K near Nakifuma Trust Medical Centre. Kuwembula died on the spot, and his body was found trapped in the wreckage. The driver of the truck fled the scene. Police responded immediately and are conducting inquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident,” Onyango added.
Kuwembula’s body has since been taken to Kayunga Hospital mortuary.
Images from the scene show parts of the engine of Kuwembula’s vehicle scattered across the road, along with blood-stained debris, illustrating the force of the impact.
Kuwembula is the second LC5 chairperson from the Busoga sub-region to die in a road crash.
George Patrick Bageya, the former Iganga LC5 chairperson, died in September 2011 at Nasuti parish, Nambale subcounty, Iganga district, after his vehicle, registration number UAF 088Q, crashed into an Isuzu truck, registration number UAJ 232H, loaded with firewood.
