The Chairperson of the Kampala Butcher Traders’ Association (KABUTA), Musa Ssenabulya, has pledged to apply the skills gained from a recent packaging and branding masterclass to improve Uganda’s meat industry, starting with butcher shops in Kampala and surrounding areas.

Ssenabulya was among several participants, including traders, manufacturers, and processors, who attended a 3-day training organised by the Ministry of Trade in partnership with the Institute of Packaging Professionals Uganda (IPPU). The training, held at Protea Hotel, focused on equipping businesses with modern packaging techniques to boost hygiene, branding, and competitiveness.

“I will be an ambassador for packaging by sharing these skills with our members,” Ssenabulya said. “Our goal is to transform the butcher business with safer, more attractive packaging that meets both local and international standards.”

He also emphasised that proper packaging helps minimise meat contamination caused by overhandling, a key concern in the industry.

The state minister for Trade and Industry, Gen. Mbadi Mbasu, urged participants to embrace packaging as a core part of modern business and highlighted upcoming government efforts to roll out similar training across Uganda.

The training comes at a time when Uganda has acquired a national barcode system and is developing a branding strategy to support product visibility in global markets.
