KAMPALA - Uganda’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) academy, aimed at providing education, training in practical AI skills for career advancement and business growth, has been unveiled.

During the October 31, 2025, unveiling at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja commended the organisers of the 16th Annual CEO Forum for championing innovation and leadership development, describing the event as a key platform for nurturing Uganda’s next generation of leaders.

“We commend you for providing learning and networking opportunities, and now the AI academy, which are crucial for individuals seeking to enter the AI field and for companies looking to integrate AI into their operations,” she said in a speech delivered on her behalf by information minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi.

She further said that the AI Academy will equip leaders and innovators with the skills, ethics, and mindset to thrive in the age of intelligent technology.

The academy will work in collaboration with global institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology, Strathmore University, the University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch Business School, Lagos Business School, and the African Association of Business Schools.

Nabbanja also praised Makerere University’s partnership with the CEO Summit team for transforming the institution from an “ivory tower into an impact tower,” driven by commercial innovations, digital research clusters, and community engagement through the Makerere Convocation Centre.

The Prime Minister said this year’s theme, “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Transformation,” was timely as nations around the world adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance governance and service delivery.

“The Government of Uganda, through the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, and the National Information Technology Authority, has embarked on integrating AI into governance and service delivery,” Nabbanja stated.

Among the initiatives underway are the development of a National AI Strategy (2024–2030) and the use of AI-enabled predictive analytics, chatbots, and traffic management systems in public services.

Other applications include AI in agriculture for yield prediction and climate adaptation, AI in education for personalised learning, AI in financial inclusion through data-driven credit scoring, and AI in governance to promote transparency and automate public systems.

As Uganda embraces these technologies, Nabbanja stressed the importance of ensuring that innovation aligns with sustainability. She applauded the CEO Summit’s collaboration with D’Carbon Academy and Regenerate Africa on environmental, social and governance (ESG) leadership and green transformation.

“The Office of the Prime Minister continues to integrate ESG principles into national planning and public investment management, ensuring that development is green, inclusive, and resilient,” she said.

She welcomed to Uganda the Indian Institute of Technology—often referred to as India’s Silicon Valley—saying the collaboration would enhance automation and data governance systems that support the National Development Plan.

The Prime Minister officially launched five CEO Cluster Teams, each designed to drive Uganda’s AI agenda and accelerate the country’s transition to a digitally intelligent economy.

The clusters will focus on Digital Transformation and AI Adoption, Green Economy and ESG, Next Generation Talent and Future of Work, Financial Innovation and Investment, and Public Policy and Governance.

“These clusters, co-chaired by Permanent Secretaries and industry leaders, embody the spirit of collaboration we need to translate AI potential into national prosperity,” Nabbanja said.
