dfcu Bank has announced the appointment of Margaret Karume as its second Executive Director, expanding its Executive Director leadership team to two.
According to a press release from the bank, her appointment backs up the continued focus on strengthening leadership capacity, driving its transformation agenda, and enhancing value creation for customers, shareholders, and stakeholders.
Karume brings more than 30 years of banking experience across East Africa, having held senior leadership positions in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. She is widely recognised for driving institutional transformation, strengthening business performance, and building high-performing teams across the banking sector.
Prior to her appointment, Karume served as Chief Credit Officer at dfcu Bank, where she led significant progress in enhancing the quality of the bank’s credit portfolio, strengthening underwriting standards, and promoting a more disciplined and sustainable approach to growth.
Karume has also led the Customer Experience Unit, championing service excellence and fostering a stronger customer-centric culture across the organisation. Her leadership has further played a critical role in advancing the bank’s credit automation initiatives and improving collaboration across business units.
Before joining dfcu Bank, Karume served as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NCBA Bank Tanzania, where she successfully led the merger of two banking institutions to form NCBA Bank Tanzania. She also previously served as Managing Director and CEO of NIC Bank Tanzania and held several senior leadership roles in credit risk and corporate banking within the region.
Her extensive regional experience, deep understanding of banking operations, and passion for people development position her well to support the bank’s next phase of growth and transformation.
Beyond her professional achievements, Karume is deeply passionate about mentorship and talent development, particularly supporting young professionals within the banking industry. Her leadership, coaching, and commitment to knowledge-sharing continue to positively impact colleagues and teams across the region.
