Construction of sh40b Mbarara Makhanisingh Market kicks off

The construction works of the market, owned by traders under the Makhanisingh Market Landlords Association, will cost a total of sh40 billion up to its completion.

MBARARA - Leadership of the Mbarara Makhanisingh Market Landlords Association has handed over the site for the construction of a seven-storeyed Makhanisingh Market to the contractor.

The construction works of the market, owned by traders under the Makhanisingh Market Landlords Association, will cost a total of sh40 billion up to its completion.

Jackline Kankunda, the Mbarara City deputy RCC in charge of Mbarara City North Division, presided over the events as a team from  Plan Build Technical Services Ltd received the site on Tuesday (April 14).

Kakunda challenged the contractor to produce quality work and also asked landlords to support the contractor to finish the work on time by paying him the required funds.

Thomas Mukundane, the chairman of Makhanisingh Market Landlords Association, said the construction will be completed in three years.

The first phase will include: excavation, casting of the basement, pulling up the pillars and casting the retaining walls before going straight to the rest of the construction. The old structure was condemned by Mbarara City Authority.

Mukundane reported that they expect to get funding from entities including: members' contributions, AGRA Grant, Plan Build Technical Services Limited, African Development Bank, loan from Afrexim Bank, investors and individual contributions.

“I urge all members, irrespective of any differences, to join hands as we build our market. We promise to continue to work together and make sure our market construction is a success, “Mukundane stated. He thanked all members for resilience, solidarity and cooperation.

Dennis Wandela, director of Plan Build Technical Services, promised to deliver quality work and finish construction on time.
