Investment state minister Evelyn Anite has commended a mobile phone company over its plans to set up a manufacturing plant in Nakifuma district.

“I am excited and would like to ask all Ugandans to be excited for Infinix (for) the fact that they are going to be manufacturing here in Uganda in Nakifuma," Anite says.

Speaking during the launch of the company's latest mobile phone on on Thursday, April 11, 2024, Aniter said, these gays have done a great job having been in the market for eight years and transiting from being traders to manufacturers.

The minister encouraged the team to hasten the process of setting up the factory so that they stop importing the phones from China so that they create jobs for Ugandans.

According to Anite, import duty on inputs for assembling phones will be zero, while the imported assembled phones attract import duty of 10% tax of the value.

She explained that this tax is going to keep on growing and may even reach 25%: "So, the opportunity is now for you to assemble it here".

A market of 1.4 billion people

Anite urged the investor to look beyond the 40 million people Ugandan and 300 million people East African market.

“We also have a very great relationship with the African continental trade of 1.4 billion people, and you know what, our President recently became the chairperson of 122 countries plus China. So, your products will go in this market,” Anite said.
