Sports tutors in public universities have urged the Ministry of Education and Sports to offer scholarships to talented athletes if they are to compete with private universities.

The sports tutors expressed their concern after Uganda Christian University smashed Gulu 92-6 in netball, while Victoria University whipped Soroti 128-11 in the Association of Uganda University Sports games taking place at UCU in Mukono.

The tutors noted that talented athletes cannot accept to join a university that has no incentives.

“I will give you an example, last year I persuaded a good athlete to join our university, and she accepted, but I was shocked when I started preparing documentation for her registration, she had been taken by another University that gave her a full scholarship,” the Tutor noted after her game.

The same was echoed by Bruno Oribi of Soroti University who said that there is a need for not only scholarships but also open the University to another course.

“We have a big challenge. Our university is for engineering and medical students, most of them focus much on academics and have little time for sports,” Oribi stated.

In the other netball games played, Kyambogo University beat Mountains of the Moon from Fortportal 44-19, Nkumba University defeated Soroti 21 and Gulu University lost to Makerere University Business School 30-59.
