On March 4, 2024, President Yoweri Museveni awarded Abdul Katabaazi the prestigious Nalubaale Medal for his bravery in capturing the killers of Eng. Daniel Kakeedo Bbosa, the late Ndiga Clan leader.
Katabaazi—a plumber and motorcycle rider from Lungujja—embodied the essence of patriotism: selfless love for country and humanity. His actions remind us that Uganda is not just land on a map; it is the soil that feeds us, the rivers that sustain us, and the shared heritage that defines us.
Patriotism is the feeling of love, devotion, and attachment to one's country or state. It encompasses a combination of emotions related to language, ethnicity, culture, politics, and history. It is characterised by a strong sense of national loyalty and pride.
Patriotism is the heartbeat of our nation. It binds 45 million Ugandans into one resilient family, turning individual struggles into collective triumphs. When we cherish Uganda deeply, we protect its resources, uphold its dignity, and reject greed or division.
The National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps has made strides in promoting this virtue, especially among youth. But patriotism cannot be delegated—it begins with you. Here’s how we can make it a way of life:
Teach Uganda’s Story
Our children must know the price of peace. Schools should teach history as a living legacy—of ancestors’ sacrifices, leaders’ vision, and ordinary citizens’ resilience. A nation without memory is a tree without roots.
Lead by Example:
Patriotism starts with small acts: refusing to litter, paying taxes diligently, or defending Uganda’s name abroad. Leaders must prioritise service over self-interest; corruption and tribalism betray the nation’s trust.
Celebrate Everyday Heroes; From Makerere’s innovators to Bushenyi’s farmers, Uganda thrives on unsung heroes. Media must spotlight these stories. Let our national anthem stir souls, not just lips.
Serve, Don’t Exploit: Ask yourself How can I build Uganda?” Volunteer, support local businesses, and report crime. Even mentoring a child plants seeds of patriotism.
Unite Beyond Tribes; Our 56 tribes are Uganda’s strength, but unity is its future. Speak Luganda, Runyankole, or Swahili with pride—but never let language divide. A patriot sees a Ugandan first.
The Uganda We Can Build: Imagine a nation where every morning begins with the question: “What can I do for my country today?”
Patriotism is not policy—it is fire in the soul. Let us ignite it in every home, school, and heart. Uganda is ours to love, defend, and elevate.
