Northern Bypass hit-and-run incident leaves one dead

Tragedy struck on the Northern Bypass at Kisasi in Kampala when a hit-and-run crash claimed the life of Beatrice Bukirwa, 53. 

The pedestrian was a resident of Kigowa II in Nakawa Division, Kampala District.

The incident, reported by Ntinda Police Station at 8:30 pm on Wednesday (April 30, 2024), sent shockwaves through the community.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Bukirwa was fatally struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle while crossing the road.

Despite the lack of adherence to traffic light regulations by the pedestrian, the incident highlights the dangers posed by reckless driving on highways, according to Police.

Preliminary Police investigations indicate that reckless drivers on the highway pose a significant threat to road users, with speeding and failure to adhere to traffic regulations contributing to numerous accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

According to the traffic Police, pedestrians, in particular, face grave dangers when crossing roads without following traffic regulations, such as using designated crosswalks and obeying traffic signals.

“Failure to do so increases the risk of accidents and highlights the need for heightened awareness and vigilance among pedestrians.
