MUKONO - The family of the late Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga was to hold the last funeral rites for the former Archbishop of Kampala on Saturday, during which an heir would be named.

Together with the Catholic Church, the family organised the function that was to take place at Kyabakadde in Mukono district.

Paul Ssemogerere said his immediate predecessor at the helm of Kampala Archdiocese had responsibility in his family: he was the heir to his late father, Joseph Wamala Nsubuga, who died in 1984.

Lwanga died in April 2021 at the age of 68.

His sister, Rose Namutebi Lukwago, said Lwanga was not only their eldest brother, but also the father figure of the family.

"Our father passed on when some of us were still young, but our elder brother Lwanga was there for us in all situations together with our mother, Matilda Nakkonde," she said.

"As a family, we have to pass over the responsibility to another person.

"We thank Archbishops [Augustine] Kasujja and Ssemogerere for standing with us, and all in Luwero and Kampala who consoled us.”

Typically, last funeral rites mark the bereaved family's end of mourning period.

Saturday's function was to start with Mass led by Archbishop Ssemogerere.
