As candidates begin the national examinations starting next week, it is a duty of every stakeholder to play their part and accord students the necessary support. While schools play a significant role in ensuring students are well-prepared, parents also have a vital part to play in supporting their children during this period. Parental involvement is essential in helping candidates feel confident, focused and prepared for the exams.
Parents can start by creating a supportive environment at home. This means providing a quiet, comfortable, and distraction-free space for studying for the day scholars. For those in boarding school, ensure your child has all the necessary resources, such as textbooks, past papers, and stationery, to help them study effectively. This can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing your child to focus on their studies.
Parents can also encourage healthy habits that promote physical and mental well-being. Ensure your child gets enough sleep, eats nutritious food, and engages in regular physical activity. A healthy body and mind are better equipped to handle the pressures of exam preparation.
Regular communication with teachers can help parents stay informed about their child's progress. Attend parent-teacher meetings, ask about your child's performance, and discuss any areas of concern. This will enable you to provide targeted support and guidance to your child. You can also help your child set realistic goals and develop a study plan that suits their needs.
As a parent you can play a significant role in reducing anxiety and stress in children. Encourage open communication about their feelings and concerns. Listen attentively to their worries and offer reassurance without dismissing their fears. Remind them that it's normal to feel anxious and that they are well-prepared.
While it's natural to want your child to perform well, avoid putting unnecessary pressure on them. Focus on effort rather than results, and praise your child for their hard work and dedication. Avoid comparisons with others, as this can create undue stress and anxiety. Instead, focus on your child's individual progress and celebrate their achievements.
Parents can also be positive role models by demonstrating healthy attitudes towards exams. Avoid expressing excessive anxiety or stress yourself, as this can rub off on your child. Instead, show your child that you believe in their abilities and are confident in their preparation.
Finally, parents can provide emotional support to their children during this challenging period. Be available to listen, offer words of encouragement, and remind your child that they are not alone. A supportive parent can make a significant difference in a child's confidence and overall well-being.
Parents play a vital role in supporting their children during the national examinations. By creating a supportive environment, encouraging healthy habits, monitoring progress, reducing anxiety and stress, avoiding unnecessary pressure, being a positive role model, and providing emotional support, parents can help their children feel confident, focused, and prepared for the exams.
Parental involvement is essential in helping candidates achieve their full potential. Let's work together to ensure our candidates excel in their exams and reach their academic goals.
