Water engineers are on a 24-hour assignment to restore water supply after the Manafwa-Tororo main supply line whose pipes were washed away by huge floods of rivers Lutaaso and Namunyiri in Namisindwa district.
The raging floods caused by heavy downpours have constantly flooded River Namunyiri in Namisindwa district and washed off the main transmission line.
The most affected areas include Morukatipe, Kwapa, Mella, Apokor, Kalait, Atangi, Kojim, and the neighboring district of Namisindwa.
On Saturday, April 20th, 2024, National Water and Sewerage Corporation Tororo area spokesperson Zubair Isa Arima said efforts to restore supply by anchoring and construction of gabion boxes are underway.
Arima called upon the residents to utilize the available water sparingly as their team is doing its best to ensure that they are served.
‘’During this season of heavy downpours, NWSC Kwapa-Magodes and the areas of Manafwa, Namisindwa experience water supply hindrances due to water main displacements along the different river streams. These occurrences have led to intermittence in water supply in the aforementioned areas.
To tackle this, stringent mitigation water restoration initiatives have been put in place. This, among others, includes appropriate and long-lasting solutions.
To aid continuity in water supply, effective restoration works are being conducted in all the areas prone to flooding and land movement. A case in point is the ongoing works across the Lutaaso River. Casting pedestals to support the transmission mains along the stream is ongoing’’.
Arima said upon completion of the works, the areas of Butiru, Magodes, Molo, and Merikit sub-counties will have stability in the water supply
