Families in Buliisa district which have lost loved ones and livelihoods to wandering elephants have asked the Government to intervene with compensation and treatment for surviving victims.

This follows intensified attacks by elephants in the sub-counties that border Bugungu Wildlife Reserve. The elephants have destroyed the lives, homes and gardens of the locals, leaving them devastated.

Edson Tumwesigye, a resident of Kichooke in Bugana parish, says that he is struggling with a two-year-old granddaughter whose mother, Bridget Katulinde, was killed by six elephants that attacked her while in the garden that is 4 kilometres away from the wildlife reserve.

On Friday, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja directed the Uganda Wildlife Authority to start electing an electric fence within three months.

Fred Kiiza, the chief warden, Uganda Wildlife Authority, noted that the affected families will be compensated with 20 million shillings, adding that plans are underway to recruit more scouts to deploy in the areas that are prone to elephants.

Nabbanja gave 1 million to cater for the two-year-old girl whose mother was killed by stray elephants.
