In an era defined by rising authoritarianism, neo-fascism, and foreign interference, the global fight for justice and dignity has never been more urgent.
As a Pan-Africanist and founding member of Uganda’s chapter of the International Antifascist Movement, I believe Africa must boldly join hands with global movements defending democracy, peace, and true sovereignty.
Late last year, over 1,100 delegates from 76 countries convened in Caracas, Venezuela, for the inaugural International Antifascist Movement global summit.
This historic event signaled a new wave of internationalism rooted in Global South struggles, a collective stand against the dangerous resurgence of fascist ideologies that threaten humanity and our planet. Fascism today manifests as digital, economic, and cultural forces eroding freedoms, fueling hate, and widening inequalities. It thrives on undermining national sovereignty and imposing unjust foreign agendas.
Uganda’s experience mirrors these global challenges. Foreign cultural impositions, economic pressures, and political interference threaten our institutions and values. The fight against fascism is inseparable from our struggle for genuine independence, social justice, and economic emancipation. Ugandan youth, in particular, must connect with this global movement, strengthening our capacity to resist and shape our own destiny.
My direct observation of Venezuela’s recent elections affirms the power of sovereign democratic processes safeguarded by credible institutions. On May 25, 2025, Venezuelan citizens elected new deputies to the National Assembly as well as 24 state governors and legislative councils.
The Great Patriotic Pole (GPP), the coalition led by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) founded by Commander Hugo Chávez, secured a sweeping victory, winning more than three-quarters of National Assembly seats and reclaiming 23 of 24 governorships, including key regions like Barinas, Nueva Esparta, and Zulia.
This overwhelming victory against a divided opposition coalition highlights Venezuela’s resilient democracy and the strong leadership of President Nicolás Maduro Moros. Despite relentless external pressures and sanctions designed to destabilise the country, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) conducted a transparent and professional electoral process, verified by 400 international observers from diverse continents and political spectrums, including African parliaments and electoral bodies.
Venezuela’s 21st-century democracy stands as a beacon for the Global South. Its people and leaders embody courage and resilience in defending sovereignty under siege.
Africa faces similar external challenges, such as economic sanctions, political interference, and attempts to divide our people. Our path forward lies in uniting across borders through movements like the International Antifascist Movement, embracing a Pan-African spirit of solidarity, and rejecting foreign agendas that undermine our welfare.
This fight is not only political, but deeply social and cultural. Fascism’s roots lie in systemic racism, patriarchy, and suppression of diversity.
We must, therefore, build inclusive futures where youth, women, indigenous voices, and marginalised communities are central. Only through this approach can we build resilient societies grounded in justice and equality.
Moreover, resisting neo-fascism must be linked to the urgent global struggle for environmental justice. Climate change disproportionately affects Africa’s most vulnerable communities. The antifascist struggle calls for a new socialism for the 21st century, one that defends life, protects our environment, and rejects capitalist exploitation, destroying our natural heritage.
Uganda and Africa stand at a crossroads. We can either succumb to external pressures and internal divisions or rise in bold solidarity with global movements resisting fascism, imperialism, and exploitation. The International Antifascist Movement presents a beacon of hope, a platform uniting us in defence of sovereignty, social justice, and planetary survival.
It is time for Ugandans to embrace this historic opportunity, deepen international cooperation, and commit to a future defined by freedom, dignity, and peace. Our continent’s destiny depends on it.
