A 12-year-old girl is among the people whose lives have been claimed by the latest floods in the Elgon region, New Vision Online has learnt.

According to the Police in the Elgon region, they are investigating two separate incidents in which two male adults and a child are suspected to have perished in flash floods following heavy rains on August 17, 2025, night.

The first incident occurred in Lumumba Cell, Nabweya Ward, northern division, Mbale city, while the second was reported in Nalugugu, Sironko district.

According to Elgon Regional Police, the Mbale northern city division is investigating the Mbale case under reference CRB 308/2025.

In the Mbale incident, the Police identified the deceased as Christian Shadrack Mudulo, 50, a primary school teacher and resident of Lumumba cell, and his 12-year-old daughter, Christian Vivian Nagudi, whose body has not yet been recovered.

Police said the tragedy unfolded on August 17, 2025, at around 8:00pm, when heavy rainfall caused River Nabuyonga—located about eight meters from the family’s kitchen—to burst its banks. The floodwaters swept into their semi-permanent house while Mudulo and his daughter were cooking.

“Both victims are suspected to have been killed instantly. The wife and son were away at the time of the incident,” Police said in a statement.

A joint team of homicide detectives and the scene of crime officer (SOCO) visited and documented the scene. Mudulo’s body was conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary pending a postmortem, while the search for Vivian’s remains is still ongoing.

In a separate incident, Sironko Police recovered the body of a yet-to-be-identified male adult from Nalugugu floods. The body was also transported to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Police have urged residents living in flood-prone areas of Mt Elgon to remain vigilant, especially during the current rainy spell, warning that more lives could be at risk if communities continue to settle near riverbanks and wetlands.
