Ugandans should brace for more heat and dry conditions until mid-March, when the season rains are expected to start.

In a weather update statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Environment Alfred Okot Okidi, the unusually high temperatures are due to a combination of factors including the normal dry seasons, which start from the month of December to February, across Uganda.

He explains that temperatures then begin to rise by mid-January, reaching the peak in February, and gradually decline from early March as the March-May rainfall season begins.

Influence of a Tropical Cyclone in the Indian Ocean:

The other factor is the influence of the tropical cyclone currently in the Indian Ocean which is pulling in moisture that would otherwise be carried by southeasterly winds into East Africa including Uganda in the form of rain.

“As a result, rainfall formation is suppressed, delaying the onset of the March April May rainy season, and extending the dry and hot conditions across the country,” Okot explained.

Position of the Sun:

Okidi also explained that during February, the sun moves closer to the equator, which runs through Uganda. And that it is directly overhead at the equator twice a year, on March 21, and September 23. As the sun approaches this position in February, solar radiation increases, leading to higher surface temperatures.

What should Ugandans do?

In the meantime, Okot has advised the public to stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water during the day; Limit Physical Activity – Avoid excessive exercise during hot periods; Stay Indoors or in a Shade – Reduce exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak hours; Take Frequent Showers – Cooling down with a bath or shower helps regulate body temperature; Green Urban Areas – Planting more trees and increasing vegetation.
