The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Industry, Frank Tumwebaze, has asked scientists to produce research that can easily be understood by the farmers due to the smallholder farmers.

"Why should we produce research and it is kept on the shelves because of the farmers?” he asked.

Tumwebaze said that currently there is limited space to carry out meaningful agriculture to support the population.

He said that is why the government has invested in several projects to increase value addition using modern farming methods with increased production.

Tumwebaze made the remarks during the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) agricultural conference held May 17-19 under the theme Building Resilient Food Systems To Feed Africa For Generations at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

He said many farmers have been affected due to climate change and the environment, urging that the researchers should conform their research based on the current environment.

Tumwebaze revealed that is why all director generals of agricultural institutions were made to be part of ASARECA so that they can share the research from any member country to increase food production and fight food insecurity in Africa.

He said it saves time if research is shared to fight diseases and increase the high yields of the crops.
