Police in Kabale district have retrieved from a river a mutilated body of a young man stuffed in a sack (kaveera) suspected to have been gruesomely murdered.

The shocking incident was brought to the Police attention by area leaders who on Sunday, May 21, 2023, saw 'something' floating in the river and after close observation, they saw a human body stuffed in a sack.

In a statement released on Sunday, Kigezi Police region spokesperson Elly Maate said the LC1 chairperson for Kigongi "A" cell, William Tumuramye, alerted the Police about the dead body floating on River Rwabakazi in Rushaki cell.

He said a team of Police detectives immediately responded and visited the scene of the crime and found a decomposing body, tied in a sack.

They later mobilised and retrieved the body and took it to Kabale Regional Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.

According to the team, the body was of a man believed to have been in his mid-30s.

The team was shocked to discover several torture marks all over the body including injuries on the head and a deep stab wound on the neck.

The first impression was that he must have been killed with a sharp object and transported and dumped in the river.

"Inquiries into the matter are still ongoing and whoever is missing their dear one should visit the hospital mortuary so that the person is identified and taken for burial", Maate said.

The incident has been recorded as murder under CRB/404/2023.
