Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) Dr Patricia Achan Okiria has lauded the Lions Club of Kumi Central for their environmental conservation efforts in Teso region.
The club has planted 30 acres of various tree species in Kumi district, a move Achan believes will help restore the environment and address issues like rising global temperatures and ecosystem disruption.
Achan noted that the initiative will help mitigate the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, which have caused extreme weather events such as water level rise in lakes and disruption of ecosystems.
She also highlighted Teso's challenge with water tables and the importance of trees in attracting rainfall for farmers.
“Teso has a challenge with water tables and being in the rain shadow for long due to the lack of trees that attract rainfall for farmers,” Achan observed.

Outgoing club president Suzan Ekure reported that over 2,000 trees were planted during her tenure and dustbins were placed in Kumi town to facilitate proper waste management.
Robert Munanura, the assistant commissioner general and director of production and engineering at Uganda Prisons, encouraged more people to join the Lions Club, highlighting the organisation's commitment to serving humanity through various initiatives.
"Lions are there to serve, in small ways and big ways, whatever we can do, we are always happy because it's out of generosity from our hearts," Munanura said.
