In response to growing concerns from residents about the ongoing heavy rainfall, officials in Katakwi district have launched a data collection initiative to assess areas affected by waterlogging and flooding.
The exercise is focusing on the most impacted subcounties, including Palam, Ongongoja, and parts of Magoro and Guyaguya, among others.
James Elungat, the Katakwi district agricultural officer, has called on village chairpersons to gather information on damaged crop gardens and infrastructure, such as roads and buildings, in their respective subcounties.
As data collection continues, Elungat has advised farmers to dig channels in their crop gardens and harvest mature crops without delay.
He stressed that the information gathered will be vital in enabling the district to seek government support, particularly from the Office of the Prime Minister.
In 2021, more than 350,000 Ugandans were displaced by severe flooding, prompting Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to pledge government-funded relocation efforts.
The government has not yet issued a new statement on relocation plans for communities affected by the current floods.
