The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, through the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers Programme (UgIFT), has delivered 10 micro-scale irrigation kits worth sh191.5 million to Kapelebyong District Local Government.

The kits, which include solar panels, water tanks and pipes, will soon be distributed and installed on farms belonging to nine selected farmers, each of whom contributed 25% of the total cost.

One of the kits will remain at the district headquarters for use by the field team.

Emmanuel Opio, the communications officer for Kapelebyong district, stated that once installed, the micro-scale irrigation kits will help mitigate the harsh effects of climate change that local farmers face, leading to better commercial crop production.

He expressed optimism that the initiative will boost the economic well-being of residents in a district often affected by prolonged drought.

The UgIFT programme is designed to improve the adequacy and equity of fiscal transfers and strengthen local governments’ financial management, particularly in delivering health and education services.
