KAMPALA - Although several parts of Uganda are experiencing rains during an ideally dry season (December to the end of February), farmers shouldn’t downplay the importance of investing in irrigation systems.

This is because with the right irrigation system, a farmer is assured of growing, especially nutritious foods like fruits and vegetables, throughout the year.

The same fruits can supply the family with food as well as income. Farmers interested in these systems but have no idea about where to find them are set to benefit from the various irrigation experts who will showcase them during the Harvest Money Expo at the end of February 2026.

The Vision Group-organised expo taking place from February 27 to March 1, 2026, at the Kololo Independence Grounds, with support from the Netherlands Embassy, Uganda Development Corporation, European Union and aBi Development, among others.

According to Davis and Shirtliff Ntinda branch manager Vanessa Ainembabazi, her organisation has lined up a wide range of irrigation equipment for different farming needs, including engine-powered sprinkler systems, drip irrigation demos, pop-up sprinkler systems, rain hose and surface solar pumping systems such as the SF2.

She adds that for farmers with 1–2 acres, there are ready-made irrigation packages starting from approximately sh2.1 million for engine-powered sprinkler kits. For those farming 3–5 acres or more, there is an opportunity to get customised irrigation solutions tailored to the specific conditions on their farms.

Solar technologies at the expo

In addition to irrigation, farmers will learn through demonstrations of both domestic and commercial solar pumping water systems, including solar backup systems, batteries, solar panels and inverters.

Ainembabazi added that transitioning from engine-powered pumps to solar pumping systems reduces operational costs by eliminating fuel expenses.

“Besides, farmers continue to enjoy the same irrigation efficiency and reliability, but at a much lower long-term cost. These systems are suitable across various agricultural value chains from horticulture and crop farming to livestock production, making them a smart and sustainable investment,” she added.

Other players in the sector include Tulima Solar, Sprintech, among others.

Why irrigation

According to the agriculture ministry, irrigation will shield farmers’ crops from harsh weather conditions, while ensuring food security, nutrition and incomes for the masses.

To further support farmers’ access to irrigation equipment, the ministry, through some of its programs such as the Micro irrigation scheme, is supporting farmers’ access to irrigation systems of their choice on a cost-sharing basis.

Under this arrangement, the Government will help farmers get irrigation equipment, which means a farmer will pay less than the full cost and then the government can pay the rest.

The above programme is one of the many solutions to agriculture that the ministry will showcase at the expo.
