A beautiful sitting room must have a nice sofa; not too big or small for the space. 

There is a variety of furniture on the market; both high and low end. Therefore, selecting that which suits the class of your home is important, according to Andrew Mbabazi, an interior designer with Ayodele Interiors. 

However, after you have picked out the right furniture, how you place it in space also matters.

Mbabazi says, an oversized sofa or couch will make the room appear cramped and unbalanced while a small one makes it look awkward and empty. 

He recommends taking measurements of the room first to avoid buying the wrong furniture.

But also, Prosper Byamungu, a built environment designer cautions against filling up the space with furniture. You don’t have to add two or more sofas in a small room. Instead, you can use one loveseat (two-seater) and armchairs.

This layout allows for flexibility because you can move them around easily. Have a few seats to avoid overwhelming the room design.

Relatedly, cramming the space with mismatched furniture is another common mistake homeowners make, according to Byamungu. If you love patterns, then, pick just one piece that makes a statement and complement it with plain accessories. 

If you insist on mismatched sofas, use colour and print to blend the look together. You can also mix and match antique and modern pieces or old and new seats. You will achieve a cohesive look.
