Can. Kabonero remembered for her hospitality, spirituality

Kabonero passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Victoria Hospital in Kampala where she was admitted.

The family, relatives and friends of Can. Constance Kabonero, have gathered at All Saints Cathedral Kampala to celebrate her life.

While praying for her, Church of Uganda Archbishop Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu said Kabonero would be remembered for her hospitality, spirituality and morality demonstrated during her lifetime.

“She built a church near her home as a symbol of her commitment to her faith and lived for the Church as a true Christian,” he said of Kabonero who was pillar of the South Ankole Diocese in Ntungamo district.

In July 2009, President Yoweri Museveni congratulated Kabonero over her elevation to the rank of Canon in the Church of Uganda. She was described as an instrumental person who assisted immigrants and local people in the fight against poverty.

“I Wish the Canon a longer life to enable her to share her numerous talents for the Glory of God and our country,” reads the statement from State House then.

The late is a mother of senior presidential advisor on African Growth and Opportunity Act Suzan Muhwezi, who is also the wife of security minister Jim Muhwezi, Uganda’s ambassador to Rwanda Richard Kabonero and businessman Bob Kabonero.

Kabonero passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Victoria Hospital in Kampala where she was admitted.

Fact file

According to her biography, Kabonero, who died at the age of 92, was born in 1930 in a family with a strong Christian foundation, went to Kitunga Primary School in Ntungamo district in 1946 and later to Bweranyangi Junior in Bushenyi district from 1950-52. 

She later enrolled at Mengo Hospital where she studied and completed a nursing and midwifery course. 

After her studies, she worked as a midwife at Missionary founded maternity centres in Mukono, Masaka, Mengo, Kapeeka and Bulemeezi. 

Kabonero later got married to Dr Kosia Kabonero who was a veterinary doctor working in the then Rujumbura (Rukungiri) who later passed on in 1995.
