KAMPALA - A tragic drowning incident has claimed the life of a security guard at a luxurious residential swimming pool in Luzira, Kampala. 

On April 6, a resident (names withheld) residing in Lake Drive zone, Luzira Parish, Nakawa Division, Kampala district, reported the death of a security guard due to drowning to Jinja Road Police Station, New Vision, has learnt.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onayngo, identified the victim as Denis Katusiime, a 38-year-old security guard employed by Afrisafe Security at Victoria Apartments in Panda Pier, Luzira Parish, Kampala, who met his untimely demise around 2:00 pm at the apartment's swimming pool.

“Disturbingly, it was revealed that the swimming pool lacked supervision or rescue equipment, posing significant risks to users during emergencies,” Onyango said.

According to an eyewitness account from a cleaner at the scene, Katusiime ventured into the pool for a swim but tragically failed to resurface after entering the deeper end. Despite efforts to rescue him, it was too late to save his life.

“Disturbingly, it was revealed that the swimming pool lacked supervision or rescue equipment, posing significant risks to users during emergencies,” Onyango said.

According to fellow workers, the deceased had stayed at the same workplace for two years but they had no known history of him swimming according to police.

In response to the incident, a police team visited the scene to conduct investigations, while the body of the deceased was transported to the city mortuary for post-mortem examination, police inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his death have commenced.
