KAMPALA - Tragedy has struck through a ferocious fire tearing through Nakawa market, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire says: The tranquility of the night was shattered as the inferno roared to life, its voracious appetite consuming everything in its path.

Police were notified of the fire incident at 4:00am on Monday, March 25, 2024.

"Within moments, what was once a vibrant marketplace transformed into a scene of chaos and despair, as vendors watched helplessly as their livelihoods went up in smoke. The crackling of flames mingled with the desperate cries of those attempting to salvage what little they could, but the fire raged on relentlessly, indifferent to their plight" he said while addressing journalists at the Police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

The fire brigade officers are still probing the cause of the fire, according to Owoyesigyire.

According to him, despite the magnitude of the destruction, there was a glimmer of relief amidst the despair: no injuries were reported.
