If you plan to build your house in stages, you will need a project manager to help with supervision more so, if the site is far from where you stay.

Muhammad Nsereko a construction consultant with 3M Designs and Construction says workers might connive to steal materials or inflate costs.

He suggests finding a trusted manager. This can be you, your spouse, a friend or your architect. They should have experience and commitment.  If you are green about what to do, Nsereko advises to consult an expert for guidance.

Similarly, ensure you have good storage for the materials and tools on site. Oftentimes, when a project takes a long time, chances are, things will disappear.

Put in place a strong store or buy a lockable shipping container. If these are not possible, rent a room in the neighborhood. If it is a huge project, hire security personnel(s) to be on guard.

Alozius Gonza, president Institution of Surveyors of Uganda (ISU) advises to install electrical and plumbing fittings after you have fixed the doors, windows and perimeter wall.

He says, it is cheaper to invest in security than to keep replacing stolen fittings and tools.

“Ensure to make random visits at the site even if there is no construction going on,” he advises.
