Weekly Market Wrap: Umeme exchanges sh160m worth of shares

Turnover at the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) increased by 78.54% to reach sh341m compared to sh191m recorded the previous week.

According to the market report by Crested Capital, trading activity was vibrant across the week with ten counters recording activity. The counters collectively exchanged a total volume of 9.48 million shares, a slight uptick from the 8.98 million shares exchanged in the preceding week.

Umeme emerged as the top contributor to the week's turnover, exchanging a value of sh160m, which accounted for 47.10% of the total turnover.

Following closely was Bank of Baroda (BOBU) with a turnover of sh114.3m. Stanbic transacted sh33.8m, while MTN and CiplaQCIL traded sh28m and sh1.5m respectively.

However, despite the overall surge in turnover, NIC Holdings (NIC), dfcu Limited (DFCU), New Vision Printing & Publishing Company Limited (NVL), Uganda Clays Limited (UCL), and Airtel Uganda collectively contributed just 0.83% to the overall turnover, dealing a combined turnover of sh2.8m.

Share price movements

Only three counters had price changes, with Stanbic as the only gainer advancing by 0.19% to sh32.07. NIC led the losers, dropping 4.62% to sh6.20 and Airtel Uganda lost 1.10% to sh90.00. Other active counters remained unchanged in the period.

On the Cross-listings, East African Breweries Limited led the gainers, advancing by 10.02%, KCB Group added 2.51%, Equity Group Holdings rose 1.29%, Nation Media Group was up 0.76%, Jubilee Holdings Limited edged up by 0.34%, while Centum Investments was the only loser, shedding 3.11%.

The USE All Share Index (ALSI) closed 1.29% higher at its 3-week high of 876.19, while the C11- Crested’s local companies’ index was down 0.34% to 97.28 index points.
