Police in the Kampala Metropolitan area say they have arrested one person and impounded an SUV which is suspected to have been moving stolen cows.

The vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser with registration number UAZ 801Y, was intercepted in Nakawuka, in Wakiso District, on Thursday, January 25, and found laden with two cows, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said.

He said the Police were forced to swing into action after being alerted of animals that were being transported for sale to abattoirs in Kyengera, Wakiso and Natete in Kampala.

He said this forced the Flying Squad to set up a checkpoint, which the driver attempted to evade, prompting officers to deflate the vehicle's tyres.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, two live cows were discovered in the back seat and trunk, securely tied.

He identified the suspect as Ismah Mugema, 32, who sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention in custody at Mulago Hospital.

According to the Police, investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the stolen cattle, with suspicions pointing towards Matuga in Wakiso District.

Owoyesigyire urged anyone with information on stolen cows to visit Natete Police Station, where the matter is under thorough investigation, to get back their livestock.

"The incident underscores the persistent issue of cattle theft in various parts of the country. Law enforcement remains dedicated to curbing such crimes, and efforts to apprehend additional suspects involved in this unlawful activity are underway,” he said, adding that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Cattle theft has become rampant which is blamed on the increasing demand for beef in the country.

In November last year, it was reported that thieves broke into one of the state farms in Kisozi, Gomba district and stole 10 cows.

The animals were stolen from New Farm, a branch of Kisozi State Farm in Kifampa sub-county.
