All territorial Police commanders have been tasked to watch out for organisers who set off fireworks outside the permitted times, which can be dangerous to the public.

The Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said they have been further tasked to monitor the event and create task teams to prevent disruptions caused by forbidden fireworks.

In addition, and in close coordination with the contractors, the Police shall review and approve the location of proposed fireworks discharge sites, provide supervision and guidance to fireworks operators, prior to setting up the display, during discharge, of fireworks and after discharge to assist in determining that the launch area is safe.

“At their discretion, they shall have the authority to suspend or terminate the display due to weather or any other grounds deemed unsafe,” Enanga said on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday, December 31.

On Monday, the Police cleared 1907 venues to display fireworks during the New Year celebrations. The venues include hotels, churches, bars, clubs, and other enjoyment venues across the country.

According to Enanga, the New Year’s Eve major displays include a string of firecrackers, proximity, and special events fireworks.

He said only contractors licensed under the Explosives Act, shall display fireworks following standard fireworks displays.

These include Sky Flames Uganda Limited, Quality Lighting Uganda Limited, Extremes Events Uganda Limited, Tomil Fireworks Uganda Limited, Goshen Africa Uganda Limited, Fesco Limited, Light Africa Uganda Limited and Fire Works.

According to Enanga, the fireworks display contractor, shall be required to conduct an onsite safety assessment and that the operator shall supply 10 fire extinguishers properly tagged and functioning.

The fireworks operator is also required to supply fireworks tools and equipment for transporting and receiving, safety on-site storage and the necessary number of qualified personnel needed to set up, fire the display and thoroughly clear the entire area of fireworks debris at the conclusion of the event.
