Uganda’s laboratory sector wins award

Uganda's laboratory sector received recognition at the 6th Biennial Strengthening Laboratory Management toward Accreditation (SLMTA) Symposium in Cape Town, South Africa.

Uganda was awarded the 2nd place for having the most SLMTA accredited laboratories second to Kenya amongst all the 55 member states.

With a total of 73 internationally accredited human health laboratories across public and private sectors, as well as in research and academic institutions, Uganda stands out in the global laboratory community.

During the SLMTA symposium Wednesday, Health Minister Dr. Ruth Aceng emphasized the importance of prioritizing diagnostic services across all African nations. She highlighted the crucial role of accurate diagnoses in effectively managing diseases, preventing resource wastage, and stressed the need for African countries to allocate resources wisely.

Dr. Aceng urged African nations to organize their existing resources, enhance the visibility of laboratory services, strengthen regulatory frameworks, invest in training, build capacity, and secure government support.

During the symposium, Aceng, the DRC Deputy Health Minister, Dr. Holenn Serge Emmanuel, members of African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM) and Laboratory Directors Forum, we signed a joint l call to empower lab directors in governing medical laboratory services.

Dr. Susan Nabadda, the Commissioner of Laboratory Services at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude to the Ministry's leadership and the Department of Laboratory Services for embracing quality laboratory service delivery. She also commended partners for their invaluable support in reaching this significant achievement.
