Soldiers accused of torturing suspect in viral video remanded

Court heard that soldiers were on Monday morning filmed torturing Nelson Omona, after accusing him of theft.

The five soldiers arrested over allegedly torturing a suspected thief in Kitgum district have been remanded to Kitgum Central Prison.
Cpl. Richard Odong, Pt Martin Omara Henry, Pt Sunday Mungu Acel, Pt Denise Ogwang and Pt Moris Omara on Thursday December 24, 2023, afternoon appeared before the lower division court martial held at Lagot trading centre and were charged with aggravated torture.

Court heard that soldiers were on Monday morning filmed torturing Nelson Omona, after accusing him of theft.
Lt. Col. Moses Livingstone Kigundu, the chairperson of the court, remanded the accused to Kitgum Central Prison until when their case file shall be forwarded to the division court martial since the nature of the offence is beyond the jurisdiction of the lower court.
