Wera Motomoto Akogo group wins Teso cultural gala

The competition was organised by the Soroti Catholic Diocese’s development arm, Soroti Catholic Diocese Integrated Development Organisation (SOCADIDO), which is mandated to initiate and implement development programmes that are intended to better the living conditions of people in the Teso sub-region.

Wera Motomoto Akogo group in Amuria District was on Saturday evening crowned the best Teso cultural group after beating six teams drawn from seven districts in Teso. 

The competition was organised by the Soroti Catholic Diocese’s development arm, Soroti Catholic Diocese Integrated Development Organisation (SOCADIDO), which is mandated to initiate and implement development programmes that are intended to better the living conditions of people in the Teso sub-region. 

The gala was held under the theme “Promoting agri-business through culture”. 

Ateker Royal Troupe Serere finished second, followed by Nyero Rock Painting Cultural Troupe Kumi, Dakabela Akogo Group from Soroti, Ajeleik Jazz Band from Kapelebong, Awobe Egoyu from Kaberamido and Harambe Stars from Kalaki respectively. 

Wera Motomoto won sh3m while the second team walked with sh2m and the third sh1m. 

“I commend the Catholic Church for championing the preservation of our cultural practices. Culture is our identity that we should guard jealously,” remarked Teso affairs state minister, Dr Kenneth Obote Ongalo, in his opening remarks. 

The Kumam cultural leader, Rafael Otaya, Gweri County MP Tom Julius Ekudo, and representatives from the Iteso cultural union among others graced the function. 

Boham Okiror the coordinator of the gala noted that they are also targeting the development of talent through the performing groups who are going to be rewarded during finals. 

Fr Charles Osire who represented Bishop Dr Joseph Eciru Oliach, said the church supports the promotion of cultural practices such as songs, foods, and language.

Cultural foods were prepared in plenty that guests enjoyed. 

The team leader of the winning team, Ben Oruta, known by his stage name Uncle Ben, promised to continue composing songs that promote Teso culture across the world. 

“I’m humbled that my team was chosen the best in Teso. I pledge to continue promoting Teso cultural practices so that our tribe continues to be strong for generations to come,” Oruta said.

Otaya hailed the Catholic Church for being at the forefront of advocating for the preservation of culture in Teso.
