Sixteen people including teachers and invigilators were on Friday remanded to Luzira Prison over examination malpractice.

They include Yasin Bagagga, Geofrey Muwera Esau, Gerald Kairu, Juliet Nabirye, Brian Luwaga, Imelda Kayaga, Daniel Galimejuba, Lawrence Ofwono, Geoffrey Wanyama, Hakim Kivumbi, Fahad Bukenya, Peter Bakaki, Hakim Somadri, Kulthum Nanyombi and Hakim Ssekalala.

They are facing charges of unauthorised possession of examination papers, engaging in acts of malpractice, loss or misuse of examination papers, damage or destruction of examination papers, and impersonation.

The offences attract a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, upon conviction.

The accused appeared before Nabweru Court presided over by Grade One Magistrate Winfred Agelun and denied the charges.

The State Attorney from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution Julius Ochieng informed the court that investigations into the matter are complete.

“Since investigations are complete, we pray that you set a hearing date for the case,” Ochieng requested.

The prosecution alleges that on November 9, 2023, while at His Grace Primary School, in Kawempe Division in Kampala, under center number 130216 of Wisdom Primary School, the accused and others still at large, during or before the examinations, attempted to gain possession of the Uganda Primary Leaving Examination papers.

However, the magistrate adjourned the case to November 24, 2023, for the hearing of the accused’s bail application.
