Two people including a Primary Four pupil and her would-be rescuer have died in Madi Okollo District as the area grapples with the effects of severe flooding.

Madi Okollo is one of the districts in the lower Nile belt that is experiencing heavy rains which have caused floods.

According to the district councillor representing Rhino Camp Town Council, Siraje Ondoga, the 14-year-old was identified as Kubra Bako.

"These girls went to the swamp to fetch water after a downpour and the deceased packed her jerrycan and entered the water, unfortunately, she went to a deep end and she drowned," he said.

Unfortunately, Ondoga said, a fisherman identified as Paul Vuni drowned as he attempted to rescue the pupil.

He cautioned parents against sending their children to fetch water in the swamp during this period of heavy rains.

The two victims were laid to rest on Tuesday, November 7.
