The Police in Kampala have begun investigating a case in which one of two arrested suspects was found with a brand-new machete (panga) on the night of October 31 in Ntinda, Kampala.

The suspects, injured during a hot pursuit and with their motive not immediately known, were later taken to hospital for medical attention under Police guard.

It all started when, while out on night patrol on Tuesday this week in Ntinda, Sgt Joshua Isabirye and his team encountered three men on a motorcycle.

This was around 10:30pm in Sempagala zone.

The men, upon spotting the Police officers, tried to flee but in so doing, they collided with the Police motorcycles and caused injuries to the riders and their crew.

According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the pursuit "continued until the suspects crashed near Abed Bwanika's church, resulting in their capture and the discovery of critical information".

The rider of the motorcycle escaped during the chase.

His two injured colleagues were intercepted. They were identified as 23-year-old Derrick Kamira and Sukura Onganyi, 19.

Kamira is a resident of Kiyembe in Makindye while Onganyi resides in Kamwokya.

In a statement on Thursday, Owoyesigyire said that upon searching Kamira, he was found in possession of a new machete (panga), deftly hidden under his denim pants.

The discovery "raised concerns about their criminal intentions in the area".

Owoyesigyire said the suspects have been provided with medical care at China Hospital Naguru and are under Police guard.

Meanwhile, Police have started investigations regarding the possession of a deadly weapon against the two suspects.

The motorcycle on which the three men, including the fugitive, rode Tuesday night has since been secured as evidence along with the panga.

The runaway suspect is being hunted by Police, Owoyesigyire added.

"Further investigations will include searches of the suspects' residential homes and an effort to establish their criminal intentions within the area."
