Leaders in various capacities have eulogised deceased Lira City West division mayor Mike Ogwal Aconga.

Aconga Sunday last week succumbed to cancer-related complications at the Mulago Cancer Institute in Kampala.

Lira City West Division Member of Parliament Vincent Obong Eyit described Aconga as a good UPC mobiliser who left a good legacy.

“Aconga was highly gifted in different fields including politics, religion, and business. We have lost a truly dedicated leader who was commonly known as ''Ocor-omac'' (fearless person) a bulldozer not only in Uganda People’s Congress but in the entire political arena,” Obong said.

MP Obong testified that in his constituency alone, contributed a lot of development, especially in churches like St Jude Catholic Church, and that being a wedding person with a Christian lifestyle, the deceased transformed many people’s lives.

UPC Party President Jimmy Akena Obote said without Aconga, they would have not had a candidate in the Oyam South byelection that saw Issa Oto Amiza in the Parliament.

Another strength of Ogwal Aconga Akena said he witnessed, in Apac district chairman LCV elections to replace late Col. Okello Engola who had crossed to contest in the then newly created district of Oyam.

The leaders including President Yoweri Museveni poured eulogies on Friday during the burial ceremony at Aler in Lira City's east division attended by hundreds of mourners.

Lira Catholic Diocese vicar general Monsignor Fr Innocent Valente Opio consoled the mourners saying Aconga has just taken a rest from the world of pain to live a happy life in Heaven.

He referred to the late Ogwal as a dedicated servant who had surrendered his life solely to God by serving him as a catechist, fulfilling all the sacraments required by the Church on paying children in seminaries, of which two of them became Catholic priests.

Health minister Dr Jane Aceng Ocero, who was the chief mourner, delivered President Museveni’s cash condolence contribution of shillings 10 million to support the family.

Aceng, who doubles as the Woman Member of Parliament of the area, said President Museveni heard with great shock the death of Aconga who has been a great political pillar in the city.

“The president also thanked the wife Elizabeth Ogwal for standing firm and taking good care of the late during his long sickness until the time of his passing on. His excellency encourages you the widow, orphans, and the entire bereaved family to remain courageous and keep the home well,” Aceng said.

Aconga died at the age of 61 and is survived by a widow and 12 children.
