Karan Patel took charge of the Africa Rally Championship (ARC) lead following victory at the Zambia International Rally.

The Kenyan driver beat stiff opposition from Ugandan drivers Jas Mangat and Yasin Nasser to win the three-day rally that is the second last leg of the seven ARC legs.

He now leads the log with 120 points, nine ahead of Uganda’s Mangat (111), while Yasin Nasser is relegated to third position with 93 points after he dropped out of the event in the third-last stage.

It is a big blow to Uganda’s hopes of bringing the title home, but there is still hope as the fight heads to Tanzania next month.

There, Mangat must win and hope that Patel finishes fifth or worse if the title is to come to Uganda.

Uganda last won the continental title in 1999 when the late Charles Muhangi won it.
