The State Minister for Luwero Triangle and Rwenzori Region, Alice Karamuzi Kaboyo, has called on parents, leaders, and school heads in Isingiro District to promote vocational education in schools at all levels.

Kaboyo said once it is prioritised and adopted by all Ugandans, it will boost people’s income and address unemployment which has become the country’s biggest problem.

She said the unemployment which is rampant in Uganda is a result of the colonial education system which the Ministry of education is trying to change through the new curriculum which emphasizes skilling students.

Kaboyo said all these will enable students to be able to create jobs on their own after school. The minister was happy the program had already started to be implemented at Citizens High School in Mbarara and asked all schools to take it up.

She hailed liberators whose efforts didn’t only stop at firing a bullet but went ahead to establish institutions in their localities that have helped to create jobs for Ugandans and hailed the government for its vision to establish a secondary school at every sub-county saying this has helped to extend education services near to the Ugandan population.

The minister challenged residents in the area to support government programs like PDM.

Kaboyo made the remarks during the reunion of Citizens High School, Mbarara where she was the chief guest.

The school was started by the State Minister for Animal Industry, Lt Col Bright Rwamirama, to support the most disadvantaged children including orphans in Isingiro District.

He hailed the excellent ideas of old students who organised the reunion but most notably the idea of planting trees and cleaning towns, as a way of promoting hygiene and protection of the environment.

Rwamirama explained that he started Citizens High School to help children of poor families and was happy to note that the school has created a pool of resources. He hailed all educationists who supported the growth of the school.

The minister challenged teachers in the district to attract quality education that will also attract foreign students who will bring in resources that will support communities where schools are located.

He also emphasised vocational education, saying his school is focusing on agriculture, tailoring, pottery, and crafts, but they intend to diversify to go into carpentry and metal works.

On the reunion day, the old students launched tree planting, a strategy targeting planting over 10,000 trees before the end of the year to conserve the environment.

They will also participate in promoting hygiene through cleaning towns and they urged all Ugandans to join the tree planting campaign.

Kajumbwiine Kaweesa, the Mayor of Kaberebere Town Council, encouraged every family to plant trees.
