A total of 73 Luzira Prison inmates have graduated with diplomas in entrepreneurship and small business management from Makerere University Business School (MUBS).

The seventh awarding ceremony held at Luzira Upper Prison on Tuesday saw 73 Luzira Upper Prison inmates earn diplomas while one scooped a certificate. The graduates were for the 2017/2018 and 2020/2021 academic years.

Dr Johnson Byabashaija, the Commissioner General of Prisons who was the guest of honour, commended the exceptional accomplishment of the inmates and recognised the transformative power of education within the confines of prison walls.

“The visionary initiative aims at broadening access to education and skills development programmes within the prison system through providing inmates with the opportunity for personal growth and transformation,” the Chief jailer said.

MUBS principal Prof. Moses Muhwezi commended the inmates for their exceptional performance noting that they excelled in their respective intakes.

“There is a need to introduce business courses as part of rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for inmates given their active involvement in vocational skills development,” Muhwezi said.

Former prison warder Emmanuel Drazua, who is serving a death sentence for the murder of his wife, was among the inmates who graduated with a diploma.

“My sentence has enabled me to attain a diploma which was not the case outside. If given a second chance to live, I want to leave prison a learned man having reformed from criminality to civility,” Drazua said.
