Security composed of both Police and army maintained high visibility on the streets of Fort Portal city on Tuesday ahead of and during the scheduled visit of National Unity Platform party president Robert Kyagulanyi.

Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, arrived in Fort Portal from Mbarara and was welcomed by a huge gathering of his supporters.

Traffic came to a standstill as Kyagulanyi and his supporters moved through the streets of Fort Portal city.

After opening NUP regional offices on Ruhandiika Street, Kyagulanyi rallied the people of Toro region to join and support his party for a better Uganda.

"Toro as a region is still lagging behind in development because the current government has not prioritised your concerns," Kyagulanyi said.

He accused the Government of failing to build factories to solve unemployment, especially among the youth but to also add value to agricultural produce.

Long overdue

Gerald Rwatooro, a NUP party supporter, told New Vision Online that the opening of the regional party offices had been long overdue.

"We the party supporters have not been having a central place where we can meet and discuss matters of the party," Rwatooro said.

He explained that in some instances, they have tried to hire hotels for party activities, but in most cases, they are turned down.

"A number of hotel proprietors fear to host our party activities for one reason or the other, but now that we have our own office, co-ordinating party activities will be easy for us," he said.

Christine Alinaitwe, another NUP supporter, said the opening of the party offices is a sign that the party has now started building grassroots structures.

Alinaitwe wants the NUP leadership to fully empower the regional offices so as to remain relevant and effective.

"We should not come here a few months from now and find our party office closed due to lack of facilitation," she said.

According to Alinaitwe, the opening of the regional party offices is timely as the elections draws near.
