Over 2000 causal workers of Kampala Capital City Authority have petitioned city Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.

The workers under their community saving and credit cooperative organisations convened at the Lord Mayor's Gardens following controversies surrounding their contract and terms of service.

On Wednesday, they told Lukwago that they were unsure about the continuity of their contracts and payments. Some even confessed to having stopped working over contractual concerns.

Lukwago, while engaging with the teams organised under their organisation early this year, petitioned on the controversies surrounding their contract and terms of service.

The leaders resolved that they halt the implementation of the roadmap of alleged new contracts, instructed the casual workers to go back and work, and urged that the status quo be maintained until the controversies and concerns are resolved as per the reservation policy resolved by the authority's council.

The urban mayors who addressed the meeting called on the cleaners to remain firm and assured the workers that none would lose their jobs.

The city-elected leaders resolved to further engage in scheduled meetings to resolve the impasse.

The laborers' complaints were over causal workers who have gone months without pay, non-remittance of statutory payments like the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contribution for workers, and Pay As You Earn.

“The pay is little, and then it also comes late. Let us avoid double trouble and pay those workers on time. Why would you hire 2,000 workers when you know you cannot remunerate them,” Lukwago said.

KCCA executive director Dorothy Kisaka said KCCA will, going forward, pay the casual workers on time.

“We are in the process of streamlining our casual workforce’s payments so that they are paid on time in the future,” she told the casual workers early this year.
