Katumba said upon completion, the railway line is expected to reduce the cost of transportation, spur development and create employment opportunities with its corridor.

The Minister of Works and Transport, General Katumba Wamala on Friday launched the rehabilitation of the 375-kilometer Tororo- Gulu meter gauge railway line which has been inactive for the last 30 years due to insurgency.
The works to be undertaken by the Chinese Railways and Bridge Corporation worth sh200 billion and financed entirely by the government of Uganda are expected to be delivered within the next two years.

The railway line will pass through the major towns of Mbale, Kumi, Soroti, Lira and Gulu and will be connected to Gulu logistic hub. It will also be connected to southern Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
