Residents of Kasese district have been urged to maintain a high level of vigilance, security consciousness and to relay terror-related information to the authorities as soon as possible.

According to Rwenzori East Police region spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, Kasese continues to register terror threats after the June 16, 2023, horrific attack by suspected Allied Democratic Forces on Mpondwe Lhubiriha SSS. The attack on the school in Mpondwe town council, Kasese district left over 40 people dead.

Tumushime made the call on Wednesday during the media briefing at the Rwenzori East Police region headquarters in Kasese municipality.

He called for calm among the residents "despite the terror threats that we are getting and it is on this note that I appeal to the communities, especially at the borderline to be very vigilant and always share with us timely information concerning strange people and objects that they identify”.

According to Tumushime terror threats are being recorded in the form of anonymous letters thrown into the communities, especially along the Uganda-DR Congo border, causing panic among the local people.

“As security, we are in charge and shall continue to respond in case of any attack,” he added.

Tumushime said the Police region has continued to register several murders by unidentified people, adding that they are trying to register progress in the investigations.

“We also registered two murders in the region, one happened in the division of Hima where Manyonya Mugisa, 27, was found dead on July 21, 2023. We also registered the murder of Joward Mbaju, 25, whose body was found in a banana plantation. Investigations are on to find their cause of death,” Tumushime said.

However, former defence minister Dr Chrispus Kiyonga recently assured Kasese and the nation of continued deployment to ensure security in the area while addressing the press on how farmers can best reap from the forthcoming season.

The UPDF in conjunction with the DR Congo army continue their pursue of ADF rebels in the eastern DR Congo and recently 14 women were rescued after a fire exchange with ADF rebels and the women are currently being rehabilitated in Kasese.
