The fifth installation since the club started in 2019 was held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala on Saturday evening, where Rotarians from various clubs met to celebrate the spirit of servicing humanity.

A long-time lecturer of journalism and the current executive director of the African Center for Media Excellence, Lugalambi will replace the honorary secretary of Uganda Law Society, Ritah Namakiika Nangono.

He was officially installed by the executive chairman of Cipla Quality Chemical Industries Limited, Emmanuel Katongole, who tasked him to create hope for the people in the communities his club serves by listening to their needs.

The club is running various projects, including youth skilling and employment, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and disease prevention in Kikubamutwe, Kabalagala in Kampala.

Nangono notes that under the projects, various youth have been skilled in tailoring and secured jobs; various mosquito nets have been given out and drainages cleaned to reduce malaria infections in the area.

The club is also constructing a health centre III in Gwembuzi in Luuka district, which Nangongo said is intended to bring maternal and child health and medical services closer to the people. Currently, the people of Luuka have to move to Kamuli to access the services.

Create hope in the world

Lugalambi, who will resume his tenure on July 1, has been the supervisor of all the projects as the director of service projects in the club.

Nangono commended Lugalambi for his mobilisation skills, expressing confidence that under his leadership, the club’s impact on the community will grow bigger.

“He has a heart for the community. In all the projects we have been implementing, Lugalambi has had a hand in them. My advice to him is to carry on. He knows how to rally us a club,” she said.

Lugalambi, who joined Rotary in 2019 and is one of the founding members of RC Muyenga Tank-Hill, reiterated that all work is based on a needs assessment where the community identifies their own needs before the club intervenes to improve the state of affairs.

“We partner with the community and identify needs. We then leverage our networks and our resources as Rotarians with complementary funding from our international partners to improve the lives of our people,” he said.

He added that the club will incorporate into our activities valuable actions that promote the values such as peace and well-being espoused by the annual theme for the Rotary year 2023/24 Create Hope in the World.

The incoming district governor, Ssemwanga Francisco, said despite the attributes of humility and honesty being vital, leadership is about results, tasking Lugalambi to use the example of Jesus to sell his vision to other Rotarians in order to create an everlasting impact in communities.

The event also has an induction of eight new members in the club as well as recognition of members that have individually contributed over $1,000 (about 3.7m) to the Rotary Foundation.

The function was presided over by the current and outgoing district governor, Peace Taremwa.
