On the morning of Thursday in Oyam district, what started reportedly as a driving lesson ended with one person dead and another seriously injured.

According to sources, grader operator Tonny Olobo, who is part of the team working on the Lira-Kamdini Road, was teaching a female colleague how to drive the vehicle.

The woman, identified as Solomy Abiba, is a flag officer and is reportedly Olobo's girlfriend.

While in the driver's seat, she is said to have lost control of the grader and ended up ramming into a hardware shop in Atik cell, Loro town.

The crash had deadly consequences.

Initially, Jacob Ogwang, a resident of Apuripar cell, Abur Parish in Kole district, was critically injured. He was taken to Pope John Hospital Aber, where he succumbed to his injuries.

This was revealed by Robert Ekwaro, the LC3 chairperson of Loro town council.

Only moments before the crash happened, eyewitnesses said Ogwang, unaware of the impending tragedy, was preparing to set off from the hardware after packing his items on a motorcycle.

Then disaster struck.

Bloodied and severally injured after being hit, Ogwang was rushed to hospital, but he failed to pull through.

The grader (UAW 504Z) belongs to Mota-Engil Africa, the company working on the Lira-Kamdini Road.

Later on Thursday, Mishairi Oga Kahungu, the company's public relations officer, regretted the incident and said Olobo had been arrested by the Police.

“The driver of this vehicle, Tonny Olobo, who is the sole causer of this accident, has been arrested by the Police and Abiba, who is still at large, will be arrested," he said in a recorded statement.

Kahungu said the company is in touch with the families of the victims and the owner of the destroyed hardware.

At the time, the regional Police spokesperson of North Kyoga, Jimmy Patrick Okema, said he had yet to get the details of the accident.

“They have not yet shared, let me find out,” he said on phone.
