The Rotary Club of Kampala Springs has handed over a new maternal theatre, an extension of the existing maternity wing, to Luzira Health Centre IV.

The new ultra-modern facility is to help handle expectant mothers with complications at the time of delivery.

Luzira Health Centre IV is located inside Luzira Prison in Nakawa division.

While handing over the facility to the Uganda Prisons Services (UPS) on Thursday, the Rotary District Governor 9213, Dr Mike Ssebalu, thanked the prisons service for having accepted the gesture of goodwill to allow the Rotary Club to facilitate the refurbishment of the facility to good standards.

He noted that the staff and community around will never suffer the inconvenience of lack of theatre anymore.

Sebalu called upon the prison service to put the facility to the best use and offer the best services to the beneficiaries for whom it has been created.

He also commended the Rotary Club of Kampala Springs for a job well done.

The Service Projects Director, Rotary Club of Kampala Springs, Sharon Rutega said they have already done a needs assessment for what is needed and will be handing over another set of equipment next year by June 30.

“I thank Rotarian President Mboijana for completing the project. The incoming President next year would be able to equip the theatre,” she added.

Staff Officer Prisons Health Services Henry Natwaluma stated that this was a significant achievement for the Uganda Prisons Services (UPS), stressing that the centre serves prison personnel, neighbouring communities as well as patients from as far as Mukono.

He disclosed that in a month the health centre handles over 200 deliveries and makes about 60 referrals to Naguru Hospital for mothers with complications.

“So, with this facility, we will be able to offer a complete service to the prison staff and the community,” he noted.

Commissioner of Prisons and Acting Director of Administration John Bosco Tumwebaze said the facility represents a significant historical turning point for the Luzira Health Centre IV in terms of life-saving circumstances.

He thanked all Rotarians for their moral, material, and physical support towards the completion of the facility.

Tumwebaze urged the facility's manager and team to make sure the facility is used properly to fulfil its intended function.
