NUP activists arrested over illegal assembly

The suspects were reportedly demonstrating in solidarity with their colleagues who are currently in custody on different charges.  

The suspects, who are all female, were reportedly rounded up at Kalerwe zone, Mulago III parish, before being taken to Kawempe Police Station, where they were detained.

KAMPALA | NUP | SUPPORTERS | ARRESTED

The Police in Kampala are holding 10 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters over allegedly holding an illegal assembly and inciting violence in Kawempe. 

The suspects, who are all female, were reportedly rounded up at Kalerwe zone, Mulago III parish, before being taken to Kawempe Police Station, where they were detained. 

Those in custody have been identified as Stella Kyeone, Allen Nakiku, Milly Namatovu, Fiona Nankya, Rukia Sselonga, Jackie Bulungi, Allen Nantume, and Sylvia (another name withheld). 

Also in custody are Flavia Ramuto Apio and Elizabeth Nyanzi. 

The suspects were reportedly demonstrating in solidarity with their colleagues who are currently in custody on different charges. 

"The suspects were carrying placards written on; 'stop torture', 'Free my husband', 'We want equality for Mrs. Olivia Lutaya'," Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said on Wednesday. 

He noted that the suspects allegedly planned the demonstration at the NUP offices at Kavule, before moving "one by one and they assembled at Zakaria Plaza and they marched up to Kalerwe Market."
