The headteacher of a school in Kampala where a case of impersonation was reported during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams is expected to appear in court this Friday to answer to the charges.

National exams body UNEB said on Wednesday that the unnamed school leader would appear in court alongside the guardian of the female candidate involved in the alleged exam malpractice.

The teacher believed to have aided the process of getting a male candidate from his school to write exams for the female candidate is still on the run, UNEB's principal public relations officer, Jennifer Kalule, said in a statement.

"Police surveillance is underway," she added.

The headteacher of the school in Kawempe where the malpractice happened was detained by Police on Monday along with the guardian of the female Senior Four finalist.

UNEB said their investigations into the matter are almost concluded ahead of Friday's court appearance.

"The students will be released on Police bond to enable them continue writing their examinations as scheduled. Their next paper is on Friday," said the exams body.

Following the arrest of the suspects earlier this week, Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said they had started investigating the matter.

At a later time, he also said they would engage UNEB on the way forward.

'No major incidents'

Meanwhile, after day three of the UCE exams (Wednesday), UNEB said reports they had received indicated that the exams "were conducted safely in most parts of the country without any major occurrences".

However, there was a suspected case of impersonation in a school in Kagadi district in western Uganda during a Fine Art paper on Wednesday.

UNEB said the suspect was arrested, as investigations got underway.

In Uganda's eastern district of Kamuli, the territorial Police there are investigating invigilators, a lab technician, the headteacher, and 34 students of Verona College over claims of collusion.

"This [followed] action by a UNEB scout, who found the candidates of the second shift of the Chemistry practical paper on the second day colluding in a discussion of a suspected examination material while waiting for their turn to write the examination," said UNEB.

"The suspects have all recorded statements at Police....and the candidates have been allowed to write their examinations as scheduled."
